25th CALCO CUP
BELEK 2025

Gentlemen,

This really is ‘The Big One’! We celebrate 25 years of the Calco Cup with a spectacular four-round ‘Major’ on the stunning courses of southern Turkey.

In September 2000, eight ‘golfers’ (in the loosest sense of the word) met at the Belfry for the first ever Calco Cup inspired by, and in memory of the late Gary Birkenshaw.

Whilst the winner, Phil Mace, would be a one-hit wonder, three of that small cohort, Mssrs Callaghan, Moyle and Hardwick are still going strong with the latter the one and only Calco Cup ever-present. 25 years later a grand total of 83 golfers have trodden the hallowed Calco turf.

The final countdown to the 25th anniversary event begins with the Loosener on 7th September followed by the draw for the first round fourballs. 39 golfers will breathe a sigh of relief at not being first out of the hat..one won’t! Eagerly anticipated will be the announcement of the handicaps. Will reigning champ Jimmy Curley be awarded more shots than he has years?? Or will the handicapper take a scalpel to the two-time winner?! Shortly afterwards the Calco’s very own bookie David Ding Dong Bell will chew on a fat cigar before releasing his opening show. Rumour has it that Mark Wallis South has already emptied the vaults of several East Anglian financial institutions to make sure he has every angle covered!

Our 40 strong field will fly into Turkey from various UK airports in mid-October where our luxurious accommodation, the Titanic Deluxe, will witness all the significant Calco moments, kicking off with surely the richest ever Auction as 40 golfers go under the hammer. Four days of intense competition will follow as players search for golfing immortality at the Golden Goose end or strive to avoid the ultimate humiliation at the Moose end! Will anyone beat Adam Davison’s single round Calco record of 45 or will someone match Guy Glover’s record low of 5 points! Let’s hope not! Will multiple mooses Callaghan, Copley and current incumbent Bell, be battling it out to avoid the antlers on Day 4 or will a new name fall into the lower reaches and suffer a nerve shredding final round? It can happen to anyone, just ask three-time winner Pete Burke!

Who will claim the ultimate prize? Two-time winner Al Sumner returns, boasting an exceptional Calco record. Rookies also have an excellent record. Will one of this year’s newcomers hit the jackpot? Of those to never have claimed the trophy could it finally be Andy Fearnsides or Robbe Fleming’s year, or, whisper it, could one Stephen Hardwick finally fulfil his golfing destiny??!

Only one thing is certain, whether it’s the ultimate in camaraderie, the fancy dress, the auction, the book, the presentation, the winners speech or the bedecking of the Moose the 25th edition will be every bit as memorable as the years which have preceded it. Time to raise a glass to the institution which is the Calco Cup. Happy 25th Anniversary.

See you soon boys

SAS, with guest appearance Benny ‘Boy’ Moyle 🙂

The Warm Up

The Sun always shines on the Calco Boys (abroad!?!) ……….
However we thought the persistent drizzle for a good hour has only wet the appetite for what’s to come 😎

Once again the Calco Warm Up proved to be a tremendous success as many old faces met up to test their skills. Also out in force were six rookies who joined us for a great day. Just a quick thank you, as always, to our southern contingency for a fantastic effort in joining us on the day. Ten southern boys making the journey is a tremendous effort ❤️

Once again we turned up to Howley Hall GC for the days event and shenanigans and once again they did us proud as the day ran fantastically well. The atmosphere on the first tee box was electric as Calconians went to battle.

In the first group out was our beloved Ginger Moose and with some severe sledging going on and a little moose head peering over his shoulder he managed to compose himself and drive one straight down the middle. Has Mr Copley overcome his demons!!

We ran two competitions on the day, a team event, after the success of last years MWS format and an individual Stableford event. There was a slight change to the team event with just two to score on each hole and all four to score on hole 18. Again this proved very competitive with just ten points separating all nine teams coming to the last hole. Approaching the last Mr Woolridge’s team were leading the way by one point but after a below par last hole they managed to drop out of the top two positions! This enabled Mr Fearnsides lot to burst clear with a cracking ten points haul on the last ( even Coco himself finishing with a gross par 🤡 ). Stevie Tatts team took advantage of Team Woolridge’s collapse to sneak into second spot with a decent eight points on the last!

Team prizes sponsored by the Calco Cup, full team scores below.

The team event is great fun and keeps everyone interested till the end not wanting to let your team mates down. However the Calco Challenge Cup is an individual event and I’m sure that’s where your interests lie in how you performed on the day, let’s see where you finished! Is there a stand out Golden Goose or a nervous moose amongst us!?!

MWS, Stevie Hardwick and Charlie Porter all found some form on the warm up day coming in with 40 points each. MWS taking the spoils with a back 9 of 24 points. Hardwick second with a back 9 of 22 points and Charlie picking up the final money place with a back 9 of 19 points. A massive improvement from Wallis on last year’s performance and rumours abound of the hard work he’s been putting in over the last 12 months which looks like is starting to pay off. No doubt will now be on the watch list for Bell’s Bookies 👀, if he wasn’t already! After a very average performance two years ago in Spain another jumping out of the pack is Charlie Porter. A very steady player who is certainly looking to peak at the right time. Sharing a buggy with El Prez on the first day who will be keeping a close eye on him 😀. Another good warm up performance from Robbe Fleming even after a ‘Hard Days Night’ with the Bootleg Beatles. Is this the Big Man’s year, one of my favourites with 3 weeks to go! El Presidente looked remarkably solid despite being on a two day bender, proper Calco prep 😀. Solid performances from the next 18 players with only four points separating them all. Huddled in that bunch included regulars such as  Doigy (great to have him back), Silent assassin, Fozmeister, Tatts and reigning champion Jimmy Curley. Some other notable ones were Sean Forster, Alan Sumner and Damien Thorngate, it’s good to welcome these three back and I’m sure they won’t be far away.

Now looking at the lower echelons , with a few moose droppings appearing, we have a few surprises this year. Simon Woolridge, Ian Warren and Gav Whitworth all well below par on the day which is very surprising as all three have had very good seasons, Ian winning the Order of Merit at Howley Hall GC, fantastic achievement. I’m sure this is just a blip and as they say ‘cream always rises’ 😀. These three will still take comfort knowing that there were still a good nine or ten players below them. One Andy Fearnsides surrounded by moose dung, surely not!! A couple of our serial mooses Ginger & Calla were once again found to be wanting and ended up in the bottom five. Surely no moose abroad 😉. However the bottom three positions on this year’s warm up were all taken up by rookies. I believe Nick & Andy Lambert were both affected by nerves on the day as I’ve played with them and there’s massive potential with both. Still time to make a few tweaks lads. Rock bottom on the day and as big a surprise as Coco winning it was Tony Dent,  ‘Hi my name’s Tony and I’m a C—T’ 🤣. Now this guy can play and what a cracking lad, no doubt in my mind this man will raise his game when it really counts!

Other prizes on the day:-

Nearest Pin – Hole 8 – Darren Mountain          £100     –              Sponsored by Graham Copley
Nearest Pin – Hole 18 – Ben Yeadon                  £100     –              Sponsored by Mark Wallis (South)
Longest Drive – Phil Lister                                     £50       –              Sponsored by Daz Burley
Best net Par 3’s – Chris Ramm/Adam Davison £50   –              Sponsored by Daz Burley

I’d just like to say a big thank you to you all for making the warm up an absolutely cracking day. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. Magic Mike from Heckmondwike (AKA James from Batley) entertained us through the evening and I’m sure you’ll agree a top class performer with plenty of tricks up his sleeve, there’s only two Jimmy Curleys!!!

A cracking draw lies ahead for the first day boys, time to bring it on, no more talking, A game at the ready.

 Bring on the Turkish delights!

 All the very best Calconians

COURSE GUIDE

DAY 1 – OLYMPOS
Set by the Mediterranean one side and the Besgoz river the other side the beautiful OLYMPOS at Cullinan Links will be the perfect introduction to the 25th Anniversary of the Calco Cup. To score well here good wedges & a strong putter are essential, there is plenty of water around the fairways to gather up any stray shots, remember the prestigious Calco trophy can’t be won on the first day but it can certainly be lost with a poor round.

DAY 2 – The National Course
Voted by many as the best course in Turkey the National will provide a stern but fair test for all Calconians. A testing par 5 followed by an island green par 3 to start the day will sort out those boys who had one too many the night before & overall this course has everything. Only your best all round game will suffice and expect some significant changes to the leaderboard.

DAY 3 – Aspendos
Back to Cullinan links for the Aspendos course and for those that enjoyed themselves at Olympos they will be licking their lips at more of the same. Day 3 is moving day, a solid game with a warm putter can see players move in contention, a cold one and moose droppings will be covering the walk off the 18th!

DAY 4 – Carya
A fitting end to the 25th Calco, a superb heathland type course and home of the Turkish Airline Open on the DP World tour for many years. Make no mistake this is a proper test, all aspects of your game will need to be on song and potentially someone could scythe through the field to grab the glory while equally at the other end a poor day could mean those antlers will be waiting, enjoy!

STORY OF 2024

The 2024 Calco visited Scotland, the home of golf, for the first time!

Day 1
Based in Edinburgh, day 1 would prove to be one of the most memorable in Calco history. The North Berwick Golf Course hugs the coastline of the Firth of Forth and was bathed in glorious sunshine, the Calconians tackled the stunning but testing course whilst dolphins were spotted off the coast.

Unfortunately they weren’t the only wildlife viewed on the day, as a seriously undercooked ‘Ding Dong’ Bell could only muster 9 points and found himself hugely cut adrift in the moose position. Only 14 points separated the remaining 22 players from Copley & Lister on 26 pts to an excellent 40 pts from Paul Ephremsen at the top.

Day 2
The shirt sleeve order of day 1 was a distant memory as the field took on Craigielaw (a hidden gem!) under grey & drizzly skies with a blustery & tricky wind.

However the conditions proved no handicap to veteran Jimmy Curley who recorded a magnificent 43 pts, five clear of John ‘Elvis’ Clements and establishing a 7 point lead going into the final day.

Day 3
The weather took an even worse turn on the final day as thick fog enveloped the Gullane course.

After a two hour wait the plus-four attired field feared the worse but cometh the hour cometh the man and a local hero emerged as rookie Scott ‘Seve’ Fraser arranged tee times and much more at his own club, Archersfield, some 15 minutes away. Thankfully the outstanding course was playable and a fleet of taxis was summoned and the day was saved.

Fraser himself would top the scoring on the day with an excellent 38 pts, Bell would make a brave bid to avoid the moose attire but would ultimately finish 5 adrift of Graham Copley who was Moosette.

Highlight of the day was a superb hole in one at the difficult 17th from Chris ‘Rambo’ Ramm scooping £500 in the process from our hole in one club which was also matched generously by our resident bookie David Bell.

A solid 38 pts would cement Curley’s pole position claiming his second Calco Cup by 7 points from Fraser & Clements completing a brilliant & memorable event.

PLAYER PROFILES

MARK WALLIS (South) - 12/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..15/18/12/18
Form last 3 years (13/12/3)
Best finish – runner up (2013)

Stunning victory in the Calco ‘Warm up’ last month at Howley had most attending staring in disbelief! Could the impossible dream come true, a Calco victory for Coco? Well Bells Bookies certainly thinks so and unbelievably Wallis South is the well backed 12/1 ante post favourite. Broke all kinds of records in his proper job this year as a Greyhound Trainer, lifting that coveted trophy will mean just as much.

PETER FORSTER - 16/1

Handicaps days 1-4 …9/11/7/11
Form last 3 years (5/27/12)
Best finish -Winner 2004

Veteran of the Calco and a true gentleman that we all look up to. Still a sweet hitting golfer and more than capable of contending and certainly not the worse handicapped player on this monumental trip! Top 10 for sure or better, still knows how to party to the limit.

CHRIS RAMM - 16/1

Handicaps days 1-4… 12/15/12/15
Form last 3 years (15/-/-)
Best finish – 3rd (2021)

Backed as if defeat is out of the question this year (33/1 – 16/1) on the back of ripping it up at Howley of late. Had the pleasure of being in his group at Archersfield last year when he joined the hole in one club on the 17th, awesome! Basically not only is he a top class lad he can play a bit and is obviously in form. 3rd in Cyprus in 2021 so I wouldn’t put anyone off, accuracy more than length off the tee is crucial especially at Cullinan Links so needs to reign that in a touch if he is to succeed.

ADAM DAVISON - 25/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..12/16/10/16
Form last 3 years (4/19/18)
Best finish – runner up 2018

Does anyone know which ‘Davo’ is going to turn up, I’m not sure even he knows! A cracking lad who I’ve had the pleasure to know for a few years now and whatever happens on the course it won’t stop him having a great time. Definitely has some Turkey form hitting an incredible 45 pts on day 3 at Belek in 2020 when finishing a creditable 4th. The same position as last year in Scotland, so all types of courses are up his alley, has the handicap committee been over cautious though, maybe?

ROB FLEMING - 25/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..5/8/4/8
Form last 3 years – (7/8/14)
Best finish – 5th 2017

Next years Northern Ryder Cup Captain & absolutely no reason why he can’t contend here. A respectable 8th in Turkey in 2020 & recently re-married, a lot of pros play better and win tournaments when newly married, new baby etc, or am I overthinking how I’m going to lose some more euros on another Fleming investment when he gets his usual ‘Calco Jelly’ nerves! Great lad and an integral part of the Calco even though he try’s his best to wind me up to no avail.

STUART KILTIE - 25/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..10/12/9/13
Form last 3 years (-/27/2)
Best finish -winner 2020

Sadly missed in Scotland last year Mr Kiltie has had a roller coaster of a ride on the Calco since a stunning debut victory in 2020 in Turkey, yes Turkey! Looks like he’s had his nuts firmly squeezed by the handicap committee but right him off at your peril, horses for courses and all that. Still laughing now when he moosed in Spain two years later so funny but he took it well bless him! Hopefully the future of the Calco when we are all passed it, god did I really say that!!

AL SUMNER - 25/1

Handicap days 1-4 …4/6/3/7
Form last 3 years (-/-/-)
Best finish – winner (2014/2007)

So good to have Al here for our 25th anniversary, and yes twice a winner of this magnificent event. Playing off a stiffer handicap than when last seen back in 2017 but generally a much better golfer these days and was steady at the warm up last month. The trip is all the better for his presence as he also knows how to sup a few beers as u would expect from a Northerner! Hope he wins some euros so he can buy some proper head covers! Jesus! Socks unbelievable.

BEN MOYLE - 28/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..14/18/12/18
Form last 3 years – (16/29/-)
Best finish – winner 2002/2013

Ben ‘18’ Moyle I believe played in the first Calco way back in 2001 and possibly has only missed one over the years. Still playing cricket like an inspired Ian Botham despite his advancing years, might whinge to everyone about his handicap but a recent round with him tells me a third Calco victory is not beyond him. Finished closer to the moose than goose in recent years but not this time, top half for certain!

PAUL RICH - 28/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..12/16/10/16
Form last 3 years – (-/17/25)
Best Finish – winner 2019

I think all would agree Mr Rich was much missed last year, a great character & now a proud forthcoming Southern Ryder Cup captain. I fancy him strongly to finish in front of his Northern counterpart Mr Fleming, which surely means he will contend. Much better golfer than when he triumphed in Cork in 2019 though he does have that golfers self destruct button in him, especially when Calla’s around! Plenty of rumours around that Calla might present him with his lost golf ball (after a drive right down middle on the first hole) at Laguna in 2022 that led to an unbelievable moose, the 28/1 wont last much longer.

DAMIAN THORNGATE - 28/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..,4/6/3/7
Form last 3 years (-/-/-)
Best Finish – 12th (2017)

Fantastic to have our popular southerner Damian back for this 25th anniversary, can u believe it’s 2018 since his last Calco! Obviously a much stronger golfer than back then and handicap committee taking no chances but positive he won’t be anywhere near Calla’s moose droppings and has a fantastic temperament on the course and loves a good time off it as well. Hopefully we will see more of him in future years.

IAN WARREN - 28/1

Handicap days 2-4 ..3/5/2/6
Form last 3 years – (-/3-)
Best Finish – 3rd (2023)

A brilliant debut in 2023 when a close up 3rd behind Sean Forster in Spain. Has not stopped improving of late winning the Howley 2025 order of merit recently, he can cope with a tough handicap and equally the relentless drinking with the Northern boys, looks a solid bet to me!

GAV WHITWORTH - 28/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..6/9/5/9
Form last 3 years ..(9/4/8)
Best finish – winner 2008

Oh so consistent every year but that second victory is eluding our Southern star, indeed it’s been 17 years since he lifted the trophy. As always Gav’s preparation will be meticulous and he will be a banker for a top 10 finish and if he is in that golden goose group on day 4 he will not wilt under the pressure, would be a very popular winner.

LEE BROOK - 33/1

Handicap days 1-4…-6/-4/-6/-4
Rookie

First of our debutants and all I can say is that in 25 years of the Calco, Lee, is without doubt the best golfer to have ever participated in the event! Jesus on two courses he has to play to 6 under just to shoot his handicap, anywhere close to that is still on a totally different planet to everyone else! Amazingly only took up golf 4 years ago and amongst many accolades he equalled the course record at Hanging Heaton with a 63, Wow!

MARTIN CROSSFIELD - 33/1

Handicap days 1-4…10/12/8/12
Form last 3 years (21/2/-)
Best finish – runner up (2019/2023)

Over the last few years our ‘Silent Assassin’ has had a very good record in the Calco (& annoyingly in the Ryder Cup) including two runner up finishes, so what happened last year. Bottom 3 in Scotland must surely be just a blip, hopefully the sunny climate is what’s needed and would be a very popular winner, 33/1 is tempting.

STEVE HARDWICK - 33/1

Handicap days 1-4..6/9/4/9
Form last 3 years (8/19/20)
Best finish – 4th 2017

‘’El Presidente’ Hardwick should be proud (& Calla) of what they have achieved in creating & organising this unbelievable event for the last 25 years. Could his dream of winning this trophy actually come true? Injury free, playing superb and was just touched off by Wallis South in the ‘Warm Up’ with a brilliant round at Howley. Then he will wake up and realise it’s sadly, for him, just a dream! This year he has 4 rounds to cough up to Coco on their usual side action!

GREGG LINNELL - 33/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..13/17/11/17
Form last 3 years (6/9/16)
Best finish – 6th 2024

Firmly bedded into the Calco spirit on & off the course Mr Linnell is trending in the right direction and played fantastic in Scotland last year to finish a creditable 6th. Spies tell me he half fancies winning this 25th anniversary, it’s not beyond the realms of possibilities, hopefully he’s read the right brochure on shirt colours for each day!

PHIL RICHARDS - 33/1

Handicap days 1-4 10/12/8/12
Rookie

Looking forward to playing in Phil’s group on day 1. From what I can gather he’s taking the Calco very seriously playing regularly and losing 2 stone in preparation. Hopefully won’t get led astray off the course as I hear he likes a drink or two, I think if there was a market for top debutant he would be my choice.

MARK WALLIS (North) - 33/1

Handicap days 1-4 14/18/12/18
Form last 3 years (-/27/4)
Best finish – winner (2021)

Missing from Scotland but back for the warmer climate. One of the great characters on the Calco, amazing fete to moose in 2020 (in Turkey) and then come back and win in Cyprus the following year. Some might say leniently handicapped compared to a few on tour and he now has more bets on him to win rather than moose unlike a few years ago!

MICKY BALDWIN - 40/1

Handicap days 1-4 …10/13/9/14
Form last 3 years (-/13/23)
Best finish – winner 2017

His legendary speech when victorious in 2017 is probably the most watched video clip of all time on the Calco. Handicap has stalled somewhat over the years and hard to envisage him lifting the trophy for this year off a tough mark but certainly won’t be moosing either. I’m his biggest fan as he never fails to make me smile, a class act!

PETE BURKE - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4 …2/4/1/5
Form last 3 years – (10/-/-)
Best finish – winner (2004/2006/2016)

One of our top end players and the only 3 time winner ever in the Calco. Just a delight to be with and his golf is as sharp as his wit. Not many shots to play with in such a big field but a superb golfer on his day and 40/1 is way too big to pass on, be very dangerous if he gets off to a good start and we can expect an array of tunes to be sung to keep us all entertained in the evening.

JOHN ‘Elvis’ CLEMENTS - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4.11/14/10/15
Form last 3 years – (3/-/-)
Best finish – 3rd (2024)

Brilliant podium finish last year but wow! that axe has fallen and left Elvis ‘All Shook Up’! Had him crying on the phone to me which was hilarious, I said I would pass the message on to the committee’Don’t Be Cruel’ but at the end of the day I have a ‘Wooden Heart’. Will get crushed so a must bet to be in bottom 4!

GRAHAM COPLEY - 40/1

Handicap for days1-4 21/25/18/25
Form last 3 years – 22/15/-)
Best finish – 12th (2013)

Now would I back Copley/Clements or Pete Burke at 40/1? Let me think about that! We all love him to bits but Graham will have a tough task here. Will be looking over his shoulder to see how the likes of Calla is doing, if he’s in front of him on the leaderboard those antlers could be on him for a third time! Always a pleasure to see him, a complete ‘one off’

TONY DENT - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4 8/10/6/10
Rookie

Was good to meet Tony at the warm up and a lively character who will fit right in to the Calco group. Not too shabby a golfer by the look of it but had a shocker in the ‘warm up’ propping up the leaderboard, surely just an off day or is he another Mondeo masquerading as a Ferrari!

ANDY FEARNSIDES - 40/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..5/8/4/8
Form last 3 years – (-/6/6)
Best finish – runner up (2011)

Where do we start, much missed last year as we all love Fearny, he takes a lot of stick but gives more back, great fun! On his day a seriously good golfer and two top 6 places in his last 2 Calco’s seem to have gone unnoticed. Scrutinising the handicaps he’s not too badly off and generally starts around a quarter of the price he is currently so a must ew bet for me. On the winning team in the ‘warm up’ even if he would have been better off being Coco’s caddy on the day!

ANDY LAMBERT - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4 12/15/10/15
Rookie

Good to have the two Lamberts on board and I’m sure both will love what’s in store. I’m hearing Andy is a steady golfer and though no chances have been taken with his handicap he should safely avoid the moose group. Might be value to win one of the days, that’s if he can negotiate a round without going in a bunker, ouch!

NICK LAMBERT - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4 18/22/16/22
Rookie

Also a warm welcome to Andy’s son Nick, like all young guns he hits the ball a country mile but hitting it in the right direction could be his problem! Water is everywhere and the hazardous trees, where the ball can stay lodged in, are aplenty. Certainly on these courses accuracy and touch around the greens are key so this could easily go pear shaped but hopefully off a reasonable handicap so enough points can be gained to steer clear of the moose group.

CRAIG LIGHTOWLER - 40/1

Handicap days 1-4 13/16/11/16
Form last 3 years – (18/14/18)
Best finish – 6th (2016)

Now one of the Calco stalwarts and always enjoys his trips, a little too much on occasions! Played nicely on the ‘warm up’ inspired by Wallis South no doubt, unfortunately the handicap committee seem to have been ultra cautious. They know he has all the shots in the bag but we know consistency is the issue! Has escaped the moose by the skin of his teeth a couple of times, hopefully here as well & mid table security looks about the call.

PHIL LISTER - 40/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..9/11/7/12
Form last 3 years – (20/17/22)
Best finish – runner up (2003)

We move into the likely moose profiles and PLB comes firmly into that reckoning! Shocking Calco stats for such a so called good player, he now only comes on the trip to entertain us and organise the travel arrangements to the airport! He may as well forget trying to play serious golf, best bet is to be sharing a buggy with Calla on the last day!

STEVE MCHUGH - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4 16/19/13/20
Form last 3 years – (-/16/16)
Best Finish – 8th (2021)

After a promising debut back in 2021 when making the top 10 it’s gone a bit wrong since for Steve though not been in moose territory yet. Could be a big improver in years to come and a great lad to have on the trip, probably already been to Turkey this year as he has more holidays than Judith Charmers!

ANDREW MOORE - 40/1

Handicap days 1-4 16/19/13/20
Rookie

Again we warmly welcome a rookie to the Calco and I’m told Andrew is another who hits the ball into orbit. If it does stay on the fairway he could score very well despite what seems a tough handicap, if it isn’t straight he will need to order another bag of TaylorMade’s off Siggy! Main goal will be to go home with as many clubs as he came with as the odd one over the knee is an expensive habit to have!

PAUL SYKES - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4 13/17/11/17
Form last 3 years – (12/-/21)
Best finish – 8th (2019)

Our powerhouse ‘Siggy’ looks like he’s managed to get to the Calco without injuring himself so now he can start to show the promise he made a few years ago. Should be comfortable off his handicap and a real dark horse for Calco glory, a massive character who has quickly established himself as someone who will go above & beyond for his mates.

STEVE TATTERSFIELD - 40/1

Handicap for days 1-4 ..4/6/2/6
Form last 3 years – (19/7/13)
Best finish – winner (2011)

Disappointed in Scotland last year when nearer to the moose group than he would like and ‘warm up’ was not great! Injury issues as well I’m hearing so one of our Calco legends could find himself surrounded by moose droppings if he’s not careful, surely not? Handicap committee chairman, I believe, and hasn’t done himself any favours being off a tough mark, don’t rule out another hole in one as deadly on par 3’s.

BEN YEADON - 40/1

Handicap days 1-4 11/14/10/14
Form last 3 years – (17/11/1)
Best finish- winner (2022)

Not sure what Ben has done to continue to get slashed so much in the handicap but our 2022 winner is still an improving golfer. Full focus will be needed to avoid slipping into moose territory, always has a great time off the course and a top fella.

ALAN DOIG - 50/1

Handicap days 1-4 7/9/5/10
Form last 3 years – (-/-/17)
Best finish – winner (2011)

Superb to see one of the great characters back after a couple of years absence and he makes the trip all the better for his presence. Loud rumours that his golf is in great shape after recovering from a bad shoulder injury which is good because it will need to be off his handicap! Won’t win but won’t moose either, someone must get a recording of the shite he & Wallis (south) talk when alone together supping a few pina coladas and smoking a million bangers!

SEAN FORSTER - 50/1

Handicap days 1-4 ..6/8/4/9
Form last 3 years – (-/1)
Best finish – winner 2023

Who would have thought our ‘Baby faced Assassin’ would be off a lower handicap than his old man! Stunning victory in 2023 and didn’t play last year so properly had the famous Tatt axe come down on him. Still should be clear of the bottom 4 by day 4 so can relax and enjoy the warm weather.

CHARLIE PORTER - 50/1

Handicap days 1-4 14/17/11/18
Form last 3 years – (-/21/-)
Best finish – 18th (2022)

Charlie is back for another crack at some Calco glory, certainly is more of a lively outsider than a moose contender as he has compiled some decent rounds of late. If that putter warms up he should be top 10 at least and always manages to bring a smile to peoples faces, loves a wind up as well!

SIMON WOOLRIDGE - 50/1

Handicap days 1-4..2/4/0/4
Form last 3 years – (-/-/10)
Best finish – 3rd (2015)

Another back for more action in the Calco after a couple of years off and has took a huge slash in the handicap since a respectable 10th in 2023. That was off 12 and now plays off scratch on day 3, that’s a tough ask so shouldn’t really contend but obviously too good to moose, or is he?
Still loves to party and that will make swinging a golf club difficult the next day!

JIMMY CURLEY - 50/1

Handicap days 1-4 13/16/10/16
Form last 3 years – (1/26/-)
Best finish – winner (2003/2025)

Our defending Champion after a demolition job in Scotland last year winning by 7 shots, proving that age is no barrier in trying to win this trophy which gives a few of us hope! Duly slashed for this year’s 25th anniversary, should still keep away from the bottom 4. Will no doubt keep Foz company most nights and a few early mornings at the bar, love these two oldies!

DAVID BELL - 100/1

Handicap days 1-4 23/28/20/28
Form last 3 years – (23/28/-)
Best finish – 14th (2020)

Avoiding the moose is a quest ‘Ding Dong’ is determined to do. Indeed when last seen in Turkey in 2020 our own bookmaker finished a respectable 14th so the fact he has tempted us all with a juicy 16/1 to moose means it will cost him more than just a set of antlers if he were to drop to the bottom. Been down the range more than I have ever seen but a decent start is essential, great attitude on & off the course, a true gent and the Calco would not be the same without him.

STEPHEN CALLAGHAN - 100/1

Handicap days 1-4 22/26/19/27
Form last 3 years – (-/24/24)
Best finish – runner up (2002)

Quite what goes on in this man’s head is beyond what any psychologist in the world can help with but we love him all the same. Strong favourite to mooose but it’s been 14 years since he last wore the Antlers and as he keeps telling us he’s never moosed abroad. If he can focus on his short game I suspect he will be stress free come day 4, the world would be a worse place without Calla!

SUMMMARY

25 years of the Calco! Yes 25 years! I’ve been fortunate to have been on around 14 and each & every one has been a joy. I have forged friendships that I couldn’t imagine, it’s a family and we can’t thank Steve Hardwick & Callaghan enough for the incredible amount of time & effort they put in to making sure that this is the best golfing group in the world, bar none! We also remember why it started and Gary Birkenshaw will look down on us and be proud of what has been achieved, indeed it’s not just the SAS that makes this so memorable, it is not possible to have this without some enormous help from others, from all on the committee’s to our resident bookie and there are so many more who chip in to bring lasting memories, thank you!

Now onto the Formguide selections, we are playing two great, but friendly, courses at Cullinan Links on days 1 & 3 and these should have plenty of birdie & par opportunities for all players and I can see why the handicap committee have tried to make sure no one comes back with a ridiculous 45 pts or something. Days 2 & 4 take on the championship courses of The National & Carya, these are two different beasts altogether where only your best golf will suffice. I can quite easily see a few golfing disasters with some huge swings at both ends. The players in form are obvious, Ramm has been burning it up at Howley, Wallis South is starting to back up years of trash talk & Charlie Porter is raising a few eyebrows, these 3 have great chances. Solid top 10’s should come from the likes of Foz, Wallis North, Al Sumner, Paul Sykes, Andy Fearnsides, Gav Whitworth, Gregg Linnell but ultimately my two main selections are the forthcoming Southern Ryder Cup Captain PAUL RICH, he has been playing steady at his club Canterbury all year and looks a handicap snip. He won back in Cork in 2019 and a second Calco could be on its way…. and I think the most consistent golfer on the Calco is IAN WARREN and after a fine debut, when 3rd in 2023, he can contend again. He knows what to expect and can steadily work his way to the top of the leaderboard, both are priced up at 28/1. If I was simply betting on prices available then ANDY FEARNSIDES at a ridiculous 40/1 is a must ew bet while the same applies to CHARLIE PORTER at 50/1.

The dreaded moose is now a head scratcher, I’ve never seen David Bell so determined not to be in the bottom 4 and he has priced himself not to be. Calla has not prepared as well but somehow he keeps finding a way to escape the Antlers, it’s 14 years since he did! I still think he’s bottom 4 material but there’s some great value elsewhere, JOHN ‘ELVIS’ CLEMENTS was in bits after the handicaps came out and 33/1 is the best value bet I’ve seen in 14 years!

Of course this whole formguide is tongue in cheek so shouldn’t be taken seriously, we have had plenty of 100/1 winners & moose’s in recent years and if u can rule out Bell & Callaghan there’s plenty of value in the likes of Lister, Mchugh & Copley while newcomers Dent & Nick Lambert could get sucked into the moose group. But another absolutely hammered in the handicaps is BEN YEADON and though backed to moose already 25/1 is still way overpriced! Plenty have jointly won & moosed in this event as well, if I’m honest 2 players at 80/1 could be bang in trouble and that’s STEVE TATTERSFIELD & SIMON WOOLRIDGE, I will have a few euros on them at these prices!

Love you all & best of luck
